Unlike most couples, however, the Baers met while they were part of a covert team of CIA operatives sent into Bosnia to protect a high-ranking CIA official who had been targeted for assassination by Hezbollah. Your party of 12 can covertly mingle with former CIA operative Robert and his CIA wife, Dayna, in the lovely (and very private) Siena Room at Oliveto’s. Heyday Books was founded by Malcolm Margolin in 1974 when he published The East Bay Out, a quirky guide to the natural history of the Berkeley/Oakland area. From this modest beginning a major California cultural enterprise has risen. As an author with a special interest in memoirs and diaries, Margolin’s natural co-host of this event will be Maxine Hong Kingston. Kingston is one of this year’s honored authors for her book I Love a Broad Margin to My Life, a memoir-in-verse reflecting on aging. She is a National Book Award winner and has been a supporter of the Authors Dinner since year one. This is destined to be a lively evening with two of the Bay Area’s most engaging personalities. Enjoy vibrant conversation along with appetizers from Poulet, Ann’s Catering and wine from Mark West Wines. This event is for 10 people.

If you’re a golfer, don’t miss a chance to play the newly renovated Mira Vista Golf & Country Club course. With panoramic Bay views on one side and Wildcat Canyon on the other, Mira Vista is at once thrilling and bewildering. Your guide on this challenging outing will be one of this year’s honored authors, William Bennett Turner. In his 45 year career as a lawyer, Bill handled the trials of many notable First Amendment and civil rights cases. Despite his busy careers as lawyer, professor and writer, Bill has managed to keep his golf game in decent form. In fact, it might be difficult to tell which excites him more – the First Amendment or the first tee – but the winning bidder will get to hear his opinions on both as you make your way around the spectacular Mira Vista course. Pre or post-game analysis over lunch at the club is included.
